American Idolatry

Television ads reveal the extent of the disdain for traditional religion and the worship of material goods in US culture.

Last night I noticed a television ad for a BMW car dealership. I was dumbfounded by the declaration that this was not an ordinary car dealership, but a “shrine” and a “temple” to the “ultimate driving machine.”

I have never seen a more blatant example of the worship of material goods.

In future I’ll be searching every ad I see for the diction of religion in the service of consumerism.

Additional examples:

A pet commercial uses the tag, “For the love of dog,” clearly a play on the expression “For the love of God.”
