Literature furnishes the mind.
An unfortunate aspect of the Common Core Standards is that it subordinates literature—chiefly understood as fiction and poetry—to “informational writing.” Literature feeds the soul and nourishes the intellect. It builds vocabulary and encourages empathy. Parents need to monitor their children’s school reading assignments. If the curriculum is light on literature, parents will be wise to see that their children read literature at home.
