ADVERB

An adverb is a word that can do more than one thing. It has various functions in a sentence.Remember: a word is just a word until it is used in a sentence.

1. An adverb can describe an adjective:

The man was very tall. Very is an adverb modifying tall.

NOTE: “to modify” means to change in some way. The word very makes tall even taller.

2. An adverb can modify a verb.

An adverb can tell where or when or how the action of a verb is taking place:

The plumber left the house early. Early tells when the plumber left the house.

I live there. There tells where I live.

The baby walked uncertainly. Uncertainly is an adverb that tells how the baby walked.

3. An adverb can modify another adverb.

The baby walked very uncertainly. Very adds to the meaning of uncertainly.
